Common problems

• Water not draining

  Coins, hair or a scrap of cloth in the drain filter is the most common cause – on front-loaders the filter sits behind the small flap at the bottom. After that, a failed drain pump or a kinked hose.

• Drum not turning or not spinning

  A snapped or loose belt, worn motor carbon brushes, a weak capacitor, or a failed door interlock. A front-loader will refuse to spin if the door does not lock – that is a safety feature.

• Loud noise or jumping during spin

  Worn drum bearings make a grinding noise – a big job. An unbalanced load or an unlevel machine makes it jump; so do failed shock absorbers or suspension springs.

• No water coming in, or too much

  Debris in the inlet valve strainer, low water pressure from the tank line, a burnt inlet valve coil, or a pressure switch/level sensor fault – both cases usually show an error code.

• Water leaking

  A torn door gasket on a front-loader, a split drain hose, a loose inlet hose joint, or a blocked detergent drawer overflowing.

• PCB or display errors

  A machine that loses power mid-cycle during load-shedding can damage the board. Error codes (E3, OE, UE and so on) differ by brand – photograph the display and send it in chat.

Safety tips before you try anything yourself

• Cleaning the filter yourself is fine – unplug first and put a tray underneath; water will come out.
• Never open the back cover with the machine plugged in; the motor and heater lines carry 220 V.
• The machine's socket must be earthed – if you feel a tingle, have an electrician check the earthing.
• In a bathroom or wet area keep the plug and socket well away from water.
• Keep the child lock on front-loaders enabled so children cannot climb into the drum.

• Small jobs versus big jobs

  Filter cleaning, hose replacement, capacitor – quick and cheap. Drum bearings, motor or PCB – more time and more parts.

• Front-load versus top-load

  Front-loaders take longer to open and their parts (door lock, gasket, bearings) are generally pricier – the same job costing more is normal.

• Source of parts

  Original brand parts versus compatible ones – a big price difference. Ask which is being fitted and get a receipt and warranty.
